On this edition of Andy’s Jams, I’ll focus on great “sad songs” in history. So, if you’re feeling blue, put these suckers on your iPod and thing’s only get worse!
Counting Crows – “Colorblind”
This is one of the saddest songs ever, and it’s only Adam Duritz and a piano! Pretty cool. Whenever I’m feeling low, I listen to it. It makes me think of gray rainbows. Is that weird? I tried playing it on the guitar once but I feel like it made Duritz mad, wherever he was. Can’t mess with perfection.
Dave Matthews Band – “Lover Lay Down”
This ballad by Dave made me instantly weep when I first heard it. I have no idea what the song is about, but every time I hear it -- it speaks to me. One of the heaviest emotionally charged tunes ever penned. Again, I have no idea what it means but… I’m crying just writing about it.
Sarah McLachlan – “Adia”
One time I was bored at work and went over to visit the parks department. It seemed like no one was in there, except I could hear this kinda mopey music blaring from the corner office. I walked in and saw my friend Leslie Knope with her head down on her desk, sort of moaning as these eerie vocals washed over her. She said she was depressed because the government was about to shut down, and it seemed like this music was making it worse, so this definitely must be good to listen to when you want to be sad. Just when I started to say something to Leslie, this really gnarly bird landed in the courtyard, so I ran out to try to pet it! Turned out it was just a pigeon with some mud on it, but I watched it for a while just to see if it would do anything weird. Anyway, so, “Adia.”
